British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
